The colours of flowers are due to reflection of light by cell structures and spectral filtering by floral pigments. A challenge in modern studies on plant-pollinator interactions is understanding which perceptual factors of flowers are biologically relevant for plant reproduction, and how these optical properties evolved in the eyes of their pollinators. In this talk, I present published and unpublished work on flower colour evolution, and show how different aspects of flowers evolved so to yield high visual contrast to their pollinators.
