Basic Quality of Nature knowledge programme

plas

The Basic Quality of Nature (Basiskwaliteit Natuur - BKN) refers to the fundamental conditions required for the survival of common species. These conditions are of great importance not only to nature, but also to human health and well-being — consider clean air and drinking water, for example. The BKN initiative therefore focuses on promoting a healthy and resilient living environment for people and nature alike.

Project
summary

The natural environment in the Netherlands is under pressure, with common species disappearing from the landscape with increasing frequency. In order to ensure a healthy and resilient natural environment, it is crucial to promote BKN in both rural and urban areas. This involves ensuring that the conditions relating to abiotic factors (such as soil and water quality), landscape design (such as structural variation and species composition) and management (such as mowing and bank management) are favourable, enabling common species to return and thrive.

The aim of knowledge development relating to BKN is to compile and disseminate information, thereby creating a common language and practical tools. This will enable stakeholders to implement BKN effectively throughout the Netherlands. This project focuses on increasing knowledge and developing practical advice to contribute to the restoration and conservation of nature in the Netherlands.

What are the results
of the project?

The project will deliver a range of outputs containing practical recommendations and guidance for policymakers, managers and other stakeholders to help them get started with Basic Quality of Nature. Among other things, guidance documents will be developed to provide insight into the ecological preconditions for Basic Quality of Nature in both rural and urban areas.

Look ahead to 2030:

In the city, this means spatial planning measures will systematically consider the fundamental requirements of urban nature. Residents will be actively committed to nature and the climate in their gardens, businesses will be located in green business parks and sports fields will be surrounded by nature.
In rural are

In rural areas, water quality will have improved, allowing aquatic life to return. Riverbanks are managed ecologically, providing a source of food and shelter for insects, birds, and other animals. Meanwhile, farmers operate using sustainable business models, contributing to a natural and biodiverse landscape.
