Our partnership with BNP Paribas: working together to strengthen biodiversity

Logo BNP Paribas

BNP Paribas sees itself as ‘the bank for a changing world’. Biodiversity is one of the most pressing issues facing that ‘changing world’. At a time when biodiversity loss is one of the greatest challenges of our generation, collaboration is essential. BNP Paribas shares our conviction that biodiversity is not an afterthought, but a fundamental prerequisite for a liveable future. Combining the strengths of Naturalis and BNP Paribas creates a platform for collaboration between science, data, education, finance and business to accelerate the protection and regeneration of biodiversity.

About BNP Paribas

BNP Paribas is market leader in banking and financial services in Europe. The bank operates in 64 countries. Based on its highly diversified and integrated business model, BNP Paribas helps all its customers (private individuals, associations, entrepreneurs, SMEs and large corporate clients) to realise their projects with solutions in the areas of financing, investments, savings and insurance cover. In the Netherlands, BNP Paribas is the largest European corporate bank. They have embedded sustainability into all their activities, thereby contributing to building a sustainable future whilst ensuring the group’s performance and stability.

A partnership
driven by ambition and focus

This multi-year partnership centred on four pillars:

  • Research, monitoring & data: expanding knowledge of biodiversity.
  • Education & awareness: making this knowledge accessible and raising awareness of the importance of biodiversity within the business community.
  • Financial innovation: accelerating the development of tools that can ensure more capital is channelled towards the protection and restoration of biodiversity.
  • ‘Science-based metrics’: developing and making available measurement tools that help companies and financial institutions embed biodiversity into their strategy and decision-making.

This is yielding excellent results. For example, BNP Paribas is facilitating in-depth discussions on biodiversity with its (institutional) clients and scientists from Naturalis, with the aim of developing a biodiversity strategy.

Another example of the impact of this partnership is the expert forums that take place several times a year. During these sessions, current topics are discussed, such as the insights from COP16 and the establishment of a scientific advisory board for asset management funds. These meetings encourage knowledge-sharing, connect sectors and firmly place biodiversity on the agenda.

The CubeHouse
Biodiversiteit at the Zuidas

Naturalis has set up a permanent exhibition at ‘The CubeHouse’, the new headquarters of our strategic partner BNP Paribas, in Amsterdam’s Zuidas business district. Through this exhibition, we are bringing the story of biodiversity closer to the business community.

The power
of connection

This partnership brings together the worlds of science and financial services with a shared goal: to transform biodiversity from an urgent issue into concrete actions.

Whilst Naturalis contributes in-depth scientific knowledge and data, BNP Paribas opens doors to businesses, markets and decision-makers. This combination of cross-sector expertise, a strong network and a shared commitment to driving change is what makes this partnership so powerful.

For Naturalis, this partnership provides valuable access to the business world: the place where key sustainability decisions are made. It gives us the opportunity to apply our knowledge and tools in real decision-making processes, to test them in practice and to ensure that science has a tangible impact.
